Accounting Manager

Accounting Manager

Location: Remote, hybrid, or in-office (Frederick, MD)
Compensation: $95,000 to $120,000 base salary
Reports to: Accounting Services Director

About the role

We’re looking for an Accounting Manager to lead the client advisory relationship for a portfolio of business clients. This is not a compliance-only role. You’ll be the strategic point of contact for the clients you serve, meeting with them quarterly to talk about the financial health of their business, tax planning and savings opportunities, and where they’re headed next.

You’ll also help shape the next generation of our accounting team by mentoring Senior and Staff Accountants, identifying knowledge gaps, and partnering with our Accounting Services Director on hiring, onboarding, and performance reviews.

This role is a great fit if you’ve spent time in public accounting and you’re ready for the conversation side of the work, not just the production side. Less transaction. More conversation.

What you’ll do

  • Manage the consulting and advisory relationships for assigned clients
  • Meet with each client quarterly (virtual or in person) to review financials, projections, and tax savings opportunities
  • Meet with each client annually to deliver and discuss their tax returns
  • Identify additional advisory services clients need, and deliver those services for select clients
  • Review financial statements and tax returns prepared by Senior Accountants
  • Help identify knowledge gaps across the team and contribute to training plans
  • Assist with new employee onboarding, 90-day reviews, and quarterly staff reviews
  • Step into client ownership during transitions, onboarding, or growth periods
  • Peer review with other Accounting Managers as needed

What we’re looking for

  • Experience in public accounting, ideally with exposure to both tax and advisory work
  • Comfort leading client conversations about financial health, projections, and strategy
  • Strong technical foundation in corporate and individual tax preparation and review
  • Interest in mentoring and developing junior staff
  • EA or CPA preferred (we support and reimburse continuing education and certifications)

Location and travel

This role can be remote, hybrid, or in-office. We have a strong preference for hybrid or local candidates, but we’re open to fully remote for the right person.

If you’re fully remote, you’ll spend one week on-site in Frederick, MD for initial training, plus a few days in the office in spring and a few days in the fall for team-building weeks. Travel is paid.

Compensation and benefits

  • Base salary: $95,000 to $120,000, depending on experience
  • Tax season hours: Our tax season runs February 1 through April 15. During those weeks, the expectation is 10 additional hours on top of your regular 40, for a 50-hour week. If you want to put in more, you can. Every tax season hour is paid on top of your base salary. (For context: most public accounting firms expect 60 to 70+ hours during busy season, often unpaid for salaried staff.)
  • Bonuses: Tax season bonus, holiday bonus, and a company-wide incentive plan tied to profitability, your role, and your performance
  • PTO: Three weeks in year one, plus floating holidays, summer half-day Fridays, and a comp time program
  • Health benefits: Health insurance with BMC’s contribution growing every year of your tenure
  • Retirement: SIMPLE IRA with a 3% company match
  • Insurance: Employer-paid long-term disability and life insurance equal to your base salary
  • Wellness: Employee Assistance Program and a Care Partner Program for life’s harder seasons
  • Development: Paid continuing education, certification reimbursement, and salary increases when you earn your EA or CPA
  • Community: Paid volunteer hours through our Impact arm
